Abstract |
Blunt diaphragmatic rupture is a rare injury that occurs in 1% to 7% of all thorocoabdominal blunt trauma. A sudden increase of abdominal pressure after trauma can shear the mem-branous or muscular part of the diaphragm, risking abdominal visceral herniation. A surgical repair is the gold standard method. The routine surgical repair of the defect is accomplished by interrupted or continuous direct suture using a non-absorbable suture material. Large irregular lacerations of the diaphragm with tissue loss require more complex repairs. Prosthetic material such as polytetrafluoroethylene or polypropylene is occasionally nece-ssary to close a defect. I present the case of a 58-year-old man who suffered a diaphragmatic rupture after a traffic accident that was repaired using Gore-Tex Soft Tissue Patch. (J Acute Care Surg 2014;4:48-51) |
